Ed Yuen

We sat down with one of our Car Enthusiasts, Ed Yuen, to talk Shift, cars, and company culture.

What do you do at Shift?

I’m a Car Enthusiast. My job is to provide Shift customers with transparency about the cars, pricing, process, and anything else – all on their own schedule. For example, if you are interested in checking out one of our listed cars, you can hit our “test drive now” button, and I will bring the car to you for a free test drive. No obligation, no pushy sales tactics.

The same convenience is provided for people interested in selling a car. With the push of a button, you can get an instant quote and I can then take the car off your hands. I take care of all the legwork usually associated with closing a great deal on a car.

How did you get into cars?

Like most kids, I had that older kid in the family who I looked up to and wanted to be like. For me, this was my older cousin Mike. Mike gave me my first introductions to many things, including, but not limited to, sports, video games, and of course cars. I would watch and learn as he applied do-it-yourself projects to his prized car and slowly but surely, I would eventually do the same. That would mean, of course, that I would need a car.

As soon as I could obtain a driver’s license at age 16, I did just that and saved up $1,000 to buy my first car, a Mazda Protege. The Protege was great, but not exactly the car I had in mind for fun and games. I found and bought a Lexus IS300 shortly after. From then on, every meager paycheck I earned went straight into projects for it and, piece by piece, I took it apart and put it back together, learning the ins and outs of auto mechanics.

So, when I heard about Shift’s Car Enthusiast position, I knew it was the perfect fit for me.

What’s your favorite car of all time?

This is a very difficult question to answer because there are so many different types of cars and I’m fairly picky. It would have to be fast, nimble, beautiful, and most importantly, balanced.

Can you share a story about a Shift test drive you had recently?

Every day is a learning experience. And with such a variety of customers, I often wind up in conversations spanning a range of topics, some of which have nothing to do with cars at all. Recently, I spent two hours during a pre-purchase inspection immersed in a conversation about my career path with a customer. We were both so engrossed in the conversation that, by the time the inspection was over, we had only spent a few minutes talking about the car itself. But those few minutes were enough: the customer walked away with the car, and I left with some solid career advice.

This is just one of many reasons I love being a Car Enthusiast. Every day is different.

If you were taking a long road trip, who would you take and why?

Someone who enjoys good music, good conversation, and doesn’t live off a schedule. Oh, and someone who also likes to drive. I think there’s an art to creating and enjoying quality time spent in a car. There’s something about being out on the open road with no distractions and simply enjoying your surroundings, a great car, and great company, with no agenda to follow. But of course, not having to drive the entire time would also be nice.

How do you stay current with car knowledge?

When you have a natural passion for cars, keeping up with the latest and greatest in the world of cars isn’t a difficult task at all. You see a car on the street that you’ve never seen before (highly unlikely), and you immediately whip out that smartphone to identify, categorize, and find out all there is to know about the mystery machine. New cars and new technology are constantly being introduced through TV, radio, blogs, video reviews, and forums, all I have to do is pay attention. Let’s not forget, I also do work with an odd bunch where inevitably, every conversation somehow always finds its way back to cars.

What’s the culture like at Shift?

Even with memorable customer interactions every day, it’s the team atmosphere at Shift that I love the most. My fellow Car Enthusiasts are always willing to help out, whether that means pinpointing the perfect car for a customer or filling out paperwork.

It’s a team effort from top to bottom. We’re like one big family.
