Facebook Launches Hashtags, Further Enabling Marketers to Drive Sales

Today, Facebook announced the official rollout of hashtags. Facebook hashtags will initially be available to a small percentage of its users. Hashtags on Facebook will act like they do on other social networks like Twitter and Instagram, as a way to add context to a post around a specific show, event, or trend.

This is a big step forward for performance marketing in real-time. Hashtags are helping Facebook become a destination for real-time information, allowing marketers to target users and content related to a trend or event as it’s happening.  For marketers, this is further enabling them to truly take part in the real-time marketing revolution and drive engagement through campaigns that are relevant to the moment.

As noted by Facebook, “During prime time television alone, there are between 88 and 100 million Americans engaged on Facebook - roughly a Super Bowl-sized audience every single night. The recent "Red Wedding" episode of Game of Thrones, received over 1.5 million mentions on Facebook, representing a significant portion of the 5.2 million people who watched the show. And this year's Oscars buzz reached an all-time high on Facebook with over 66.5 million interactions, including likes, comments, and posts.”

To date, there has not been a simple way to see the larger view of what's happening or what people are talking about on Facebook at scale.

It’s Official: Facebook Announces Changes to News Feed

The rumors we reported yesterday are true; Facebook announced today that its News Feed is undergoing some changes.

In addition to new feeds for photos and music, users will also have the option of an “All Friends” feed, which only shows posts from friends. The pages only feed will now be called a “Following” feed, and will contain news from celebrities, businesses, news outlets, and sports teams connected to the user.

The redesigned news feed will also apply to mobile, although users will not see the changes on as soon as they will on the web. The desktop redesign is rolling out today, and phones/tablets will see the changes in the next few weeks.

You can find more detail in Forbes’ live coverage of Facebook’s press announcement here.

Facebook Rumored to Change Appearance of News Feed & Ads

According to multiple TechCrunch sources, Facebook will announce changes to its news feed on Thursday. Key changes in the redesign include:

  • Revamped music feed
  • New photo feed
  • Larger images and image-based ads

The Photos feed will consist of users’ photos from both Facebook and Instagram, while the Music feed will have social context (music friends are listening to) along with concerts and new albums from band pages users have liked.

As for the feed’s appearance, TechCrunch’s sources say that there will be “buttons located at the top of the feed below the search box will let users switch to view one of the different feeds at a time.” See below for their mockup of the new design:
