Facebook Launches Hashtags, Further Enabling Marketers to Drive Sales
Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 04:39PM Today, Facebook announced the official rollout of hashtags. Facebook hashtags will initially be available to a small percentage of its users. Hashtags on Facebook will act like they do on other social networks like Twitter and Instagram, as a way to add context to a post around a specific show, event, or trend.
This is a big step forward for performance marketing in real-time. Hashtags are helping Facebook become a destination for real-time information, allowing marketers to target users and content related to a trend or event as it’s happening. For marketers, this is further enabling them to truly take part in the real-time marketing revolution and drive engagement through campaigns that are relevant to the moment.
As noted by Facebook, “During prime time television alone, there are between 88 and 100 million Americans engaged on Facebook - roughly a Super Bowl-sized audience every single night. The recent "Red Wedding" episode of Game of Thrones, received over 1.5 million mentions on Facebook, representing a significant portion of the 5.2 million people who watched the show. And this year's Oscars buzz reached an all-time high on Facebook with over 66.5 million interactions, including likes, comments, and posts.”
To date, there has not been a simple way to see the larger view of what's happening or what people are talking about on Facebook at scale.
